one-on-one training for newborn photographers

Photographing newborns is one of the most rewarding things that you can do if you feel the call.

You know what I'm talking about. That drive to create beautiful images of sweet little babies. It doesn't matter how much poop or fussy moments or blazing hot rooms you have to endure. This is the thing that lights your soul on fire. This is the thing that fuels your creativity like nothing else. This is the thing that has taken over your heart and your life!

But newborns can also be the most challenging thing in your photography career. Newborn babies are adorable -- but they are also kind of like jello. They love to melt into the posing beanbag. They can be sensitive to touch. They can be tricky to move, pick up, and hold. They can throw you for lots of loops when you're first making the transition to becoming a newborn photographer.

And then on top of that, throw in new parents who are filled with tons of intense emotion, and possibly new siblings who are adjusting to a big transition in their family. And a really, really hot studio.

This can lead to a feeling that you are quietly drowning during a newborn session. There's SO MUCH going on, and so many things you need to be thinking about.

What would it be like to have SOMEONE TO guide YOU during those moments? Someone who could help you identify you strengths and help you improve areas of weakness?

Most newborn photographers who teach only demonstrate their own techniques. This can be really helpful for some learners who only need to see something done once or twice. But for others, their learning style is more hands on -- watching another photographer just isn't enough.

That's why I decided to create NEWBORN UN-MENTORING.

I wanted to offer something that fills the gap. Something to help those who still feel like they are struggling. Even if they have watched online workshops, or have had a bit of one-on-one time with a photographer during a group workshop.

This is totally one-on-one AND ALL ABOUT YOU.

I come to you, in your studio, and watch how YOU move through a session. You demonstrate your beanbag setup, lighting setup, newborn posing, and family interaction. I'll watch and offer help/guidance when needed. After the session, we'll sit down and chat about your skills. I'll help you identify your strengths, and give you tips to improve areas you struggle with.

Why un-mentoring? So you can become the best version of yourself.

Different photographers have different styles and approaches. It's important for your success in the industry that you create your own niche, rather than trying to mold yourself to be just like someone else. Un-mentoring allows you to learn with an experienced newborn photographer while still growing into your own unique style and vision.

What un-mentoring will do for you:

HELP YOU FEEL COMFORTABLE IN YOUR STUDIO
I'll help you set up your space so it flows well during your session, and is also comfortable for your clients.

HELP YOU FEEL LIKE YOU'RE IN CONTROL OF THE SESSION
If you're not sure what to do with parents and siblings, I'll help you come up with ways to better manage expectations for the session. I'll also help you if there are any areas of your interaction with the clients during sessions that need improving.

HELP YOU ACHIEVE SMOOTH BLANKETS WHEN SETTING UP YOUR POSING AREA
Does the thought of endless hours at the computer taking wrinkles out of blankets and posing fabric make you want to pound your head into cement? Me too. I'll show you how to get everything as smooth as possible during the session so you save valuable time (and your sanity!) later in post processing. I'll also help you make sure you have the best beanbag setup possible.

HELP YOU LIGHT YOUR NEWBORNS BEAUTIFULLY
Do you have a new studio light that you're unsure how to use? Or do you have no clue where to position your beanbag in relation to the window? Or do you already have good placement but still feel like something is missing? I can help you figure out what modifications you need to light your newborns beautifully.

HELP YOU WITH YOUR NEWBORN POSING AND NEWBORN INTERACTION
I'll watch you move through your session. If their are areas where you are getting stuck or not utilizing your time well, I'll help you identify the problem and make improvements. I'll also help you make sure you are keeping the baby comfortable, safe, sleepy, and well supported throughout your posing routine.

HELP YOU WRAP BETTER
If your wrapping isn't as tidy as you'd like, or it seems to always take a long time, or the baby always busts out of the wrap, I'll help you figure out how to wrap better and faster.

HELP YOU STAY CALM AND CONFIDENT WHILE SOOTHING BABIES
Babies cry -- it's normal and natural! But it can be scary when it's not your own kid or if you haven't been around babies much. Some babies are also more expressive, while others are more quiet -- just like older kids and adults. They each have their own personalities. If you're missing some essential soothing technique, I'll help you learn it and incorporate it into your skill set. I can also help you identify if crying is related to hunger, or if it's just the baby's personality. You'll feel more calm and confident when babies cry if you know what different cries mean and how to soothe.

HELP YOU GET A USABLE IMAGE ALMOST AS SOON AS BABY IS OUT OF THE CARSEAT
There are many ways to make sure you are getting a good image (and even LOTS of good images) even as soon as the first 5 minutes of the session. I'll help you plan so that you get the most out of your session, regardless of whether baby is awake or asleep, and that isn't dependent on being swaddled. It's also easy to customize for your style of photography

PRICING

JUST A BIT : $299
I'll come hang out with you in your studio for 90 minutes. You can choose one area that you want to improve, and that's what we'll focus on while we're together. The areas you have to choose from are: LIGHTING • BEANBAG/POSING AREA SETUP • NEWBORN POSING • STUDIO ORGANIZATION

A FULL UN-MENTORING DAY (6 hours) : $650
I'll be there early so we can go over beanbag set-up, lighting, and studio organization/cozy-ness. Then I'll watch you do a complete session, start to finish. I'll teach throughout the session, and we'll also chat afterwards about what you do well and how to improve any areas that aren't as strong. I'll also provide you with a personalized "cheat sheet" that lays out everything we went over. You'll be able to use that as a reference as you practice.

LOTS OF UN-MENTORING : $1200
We can spend two 6 hour mentoring sessions together, back to back across two days, if you'd like even more time to work on improving your newborn skills.

WHAT YOU NEED:

  • proof of liability insurance
  • work space (this can be a studio or an area you use in your home)
  • your camera
  • if you want to learn studio lighting, you provide all the equipment
  • your own props, posing supplies, and blankets
  • a newborn model (I do not do mentoring during paid newborn sessions, as it's not fair to paying clients to have all the interruptions to their session. You will be responsible for getting a newborn model)
